Civic issues
Topics getting the most attention in Lynchburg public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
Flock cameras and gunshot-detection microphones
The city's 15 fixed Flock cameras have been paused since August 19, and Council has now made that pause permanent by giving contractual notice to Flock. Equipment will come out of city rights-of-way after the contract terms play out — potentially without a $500-per-unit removal fee if the city waits until April 2027. The separate Raven gunshot detection system remains in service.
Downtown loitering and enforcement
Police reported late-night crowds in the 1200-1300 blocks of Main and Commerce are driving roughly $24,718 in overtime and 596 overtime hours, with 22 officer vacancies. Council members floated better recruitment, business roundtables, and a Downtown Improvement District.
Leaf Collection
Lynchburg's free curbside leaf collection starts on November 2, so it's time to rake your yard and get your leaves ready for the city crews. It's a great seasonal perk that saves you from bagging them yourself or paying for disposal.
Rezoning of Ardmore Drive lots for commercial use
Two small residential lots at a signalized intersection on Old Forest Road could become a drive-through coffee shop or small retail. City staff say the plan conflicts with the neighborhood-commercial vision for the corner, while commissioners generally like commercial use there but want more specifics. City Council makes the final call.
Edgewood Avenue rezoning continuance
The 5612 & 5616 Edgewood Avenue rezoning got delayed a second time while the petitioner shrinks the request to exclude a residential home. It returns December 8.
Marijuana retail and vape/tobacco zoning authority
Council asked the state for local zoning control over marijuana retail and backed stricter enforcement of vape, tobacco, and hemp retail rules with a restored 1,000-foot school buffer.
Right-of-Way Acquisition Process for Transportation Projects
Public Works presented (scheduled) how the city acquires land and easements for road projects, including appraisals, owner negotiations, and federal Uniform Act rules. This affects property owners whose land may be needed for future projects.
Candidate Forum
Lynchburg locals are buzzing about the upcoming city council candidate forum, a crucial event for figuring out who will actually represent your neighborhood and run the town. It's your best shot to size up the people running for office before casting a ballot.
